So I went to SWB and I realised that it is very important that as a performer, you must make the audience feel the energy you have on stage. During Vbel's and the last performance of the day (I forgot the band's name), I can feel the energy as the performers were moving and grooving along with the music. It looks nice as well. And the last band tried to interact with the audience. I think this is something I can learn and apply in my future performances. Also, somehow I feel that the mixing engineer wasn't doing his job properly. So it is very important as a performer to listen to the mix and adjust the volume so that you can be heard/ will not outshine the main instrument.

My presentation few weeks back for perp didn't go well. I have been using the sustain pedal the wrong way. I should have released and stepped on the pedal on the 1 n instead of the first beat. Also when performing the study piece and solo piece, I rushed because I felt nervous and slightly disappointed. In the future I should not rush and let my feelings earlier on affect my performance.

I've tried learning River Flows In You using the sustain pedal. Chloe taught me during an REMT recording on how to use the sustain pedal. She told me to step on the pedal each time I change chords. Jun Yuan also taught me how to step and release the pedal properly. I find it very difficult to coordinate after a while.

After three weeks of practice, I can play without the music sheets now. At first, I started practicing with right hand, then left hand, then both hands. There are some parts where I need to stretch my fingers till 1 octave. It is quite challenging for me as my fingers are quite short. But I kept on practicing playing octave notes and now I can play it better. Also when stretching my fingers, my finger doesn't have the strength to play some notes and therefore I missed some notes. And if I were to press the keys harder, it will result in the notes played being too loud and it sounds awful. That is one area that I need to work on. Also at the second chorus, there is one part that goes too fast and and I have trouble coordinating between left hand and right hand. But with enough practice, I should be able to do it. At the last part of the song, I'm quite unsure how to play as the left hand is quite different from the first two verses although the right hand is still the same. I will forget how to play it sometimes. I think I should practice with the music sheet in front of me more often.

I aim to learn 'River Flows In You' by Yiruma by the end of July. I started learning it on Tuesday. I have made great improvements. At the chorus part, it was very difficult for me to coordinate. It took me 3 days and now my coordination got better. However, I didn't record the process.

I also realised something. In order for me to improve, I must keep practising till I get it. I kept practising the part where I couldn't coordinate till I get it right, regardless of what bpm I'm practising in. It could be as slow as 60bpm, but I can increase the speed slowly. :D

I have been doing these exercises repeatedly for at least 1 hour everyday for the past 2 weeks. Billy taught Netto and I these basic exercises during a 'mini workshop' he conducted. These exercises will help me keep time (of course when you practise with a click) and also it will help me with dynamics and fill ins. He said that when I practise, I need to practise with one hand first. First hit should be harder and then I should not use any strength at all for the second hit. This will make the hihat to sound 'not so dead' because I the way play the hihat..... is too dead and emotionless. The difference in dynamics will make it sound livelier and slightly groovier. One more exercise he taught was the LRLL, RLRR exercise. L-left, R-right. This will help me in fill ins. I've not learned about fill ins yet, but for the time being, I want to keep practising these exercises till I think I am good enough to learn new things.

Also, during this week's performance class on Tuesday, Johnny helped me to improve the way I hold the drumsticks. He told me to hold the drumsticks further back so that I won't be limited when playing the drumset. Also, I need to practise my left strokes more.

I practised the chords to 'Hey Soul Sister' today and did the legato and staccato exercise on G Major, F Major, D Major and Bb Major with the click at 80bpm.

It can be confusing to go up in a certain key but go down the scale in another key. Need more practice so that I won't rush. Need even more practice on upbeats.
